Reproduction
It is believed that vampire squid reproduce by the male vampire squid depositing sperm into the sac of the female. She will deposit fewer eggs than other species and they are also larger in size (8 mm). The females can store the sperm for several weeks before they let it fertilize the eggs. She will stay in the area of these deposited eggs until they are ready to hatch. This can take about 13 months. After depositing the eggs, the female vampire squid will not eat. This process usually takes about 400 days, and she dies in the process of protecting them from starvation. The population is unknown, but there are not many vampire squid, making it hard to find a mate.
